for shawn, a little late

When I was twenty-seven and about to spend a summer in New Hampshire, I took lessons from Mike, a young and rather obnoxious Italian American. In 1948, when I was twenty-seven years old, I married Esther Louis and we had five children: Carol, Sarah, Ralph, Glen and Barry. When I was twenty-seven years old, I married a photographer in Vietnam. I had a car accident when I was twenty-seven in which I was nearly killed. I was married when I was very young, but my husband died when I was twenty-seven. I started writing stories when I was twenty-seven, and that made everything better because then I had less time to write in my diary. Then, when I was twenty-seven, ten years after the Boston accident, I had my first experience with "gross painless hematuria"; that is, much blood in the urine with neither pain nor infection. My first book was written when I was twenty-seven, and, as it turned out was successful: but as this of course was not to be foreseen with certainty, ... I foolishly went nowhere when I was twenty-seven. I was chairman of a bank when I was twenty-seven. I decided to be an artist when I was twenty-seven. I received my discharge from the army March 8, 1946 when I was twenty-seven years old and returned home to stay on March 12. When I was twenty-seven, my mother died expressing her regret for not seeing her daughter get married before her death. The thought that continues to guide me today, at the age of sixty-seven, is the same one that guided me when I was twenty-seven. I used to do this when I was twenty-seven. Yes, when I was twenty-seven.

politics ca. 1870

so, today I stumbled upon former congressman Samuel Sullivan "Sunset" Cox, a fairly despicable person, or so wikipedia informs me.

in any case, in 1870, while representing voters in New York City, he dedicated a book to them with these words:

To you I have the honour and pleasure of dedicating these "Sunbeams" of travel. They were made bright by your confidence and cheerful by your indulgence without which I could not have pursued them into far and almost untrodden paths--in "search" of the health so needed and I trust secured--for the duty which you have devolved upon me.
WESTMINSTER PALACE HOTEL, London, Sept. 1, 1869

he then went on to open this choice specimen of public writing with the following:
SEARCH FOR WINTER SUNBEAMS PRELIMINARY CHAPTER EXPLANATION OF THE TITLE SUNBEAMS TIN W IIS TV Be light And light was GEN i 3 HEATHEN teacher Longinus found in this extract the sublimest expression What the world would have been without a Sun the poet Campbell brings home to us by the tenderest of illustrations There is a Light which never was on sea or land It consecrates the poet
pursuit was for that Sunbeam which makes the tree grow and the waters flow which makes the earth warm and the air sweet which has in its prismatic rays colours to paint the beautiful flower and the pallid cheek The Sunbeams I craved are those which flow from that source whence the Stars repairing in their golden urns draw light I sought not the radiation which brings glowing heat so much
Functions of Light as that which yields temperate warmth and with warmth relief and with that health Hence my search was for Winter Sunbeams Although the search extended into the Summer it ended so far as my experience went upon a Swiss mountain peak where 11,000 feet above the sea the Sunbeams were discreetly mitigated by the aspect and tempered with the temperature of a hundred snow clad mountains It would impair the cheerful spirit of these pages were I to dwell on the physical infirmity which compelled me to seek a gentle clime and yet perhaps the only utility and I may add the primary object of this volume is to point out a path to health which is such because irradiate with beams Divine
such What a beam of light can accomplish has it not been the theme of many a girlish composition as well a s of scientific disquisition The regeneration of the Earth with every Auroral advent is it not a perpetual hymn of praise to the Creator of light and an ever during and radiant rainbow covenant of His love What a beam can do even after its untired tour of millions of miles and through uncounted periods of duration how it gilds the starry vault and builds the heavenly structure how before it the clouds about our star dissolve and the blackness of night is dispelled and how chaos becomes cosmos is but the type of what can be wrought upon the human frame and spirit by its sanitary and cheering influence It is impossible sufficiently to aggrandize the wonderful functions of Light All the powers of the Earth emanate from the Sun It gives us coal food wind and water Efforts have been made to calculate of these mechanical but they

Search for Winter Sunbeams in the Riviera, Corsica, Algiers and Spain, by Samuel Sullivan Cox

it goes on from there . . . though it rapidly turns into over 430 pages of travelogue on Cox's journey's through Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. I have no idea whether these journeys were on the public dime, but he certainly wasn't present in D.C. to vote on legislation all that time. what a public servant, eh?

EDIT:
A pleasant correspondent of mine points out the following:
"The 41st Congress met for less than a month between March and April of 1869 (presumably to swear in new members), and then recessed until December of that year. A very different era, then, when Congress had much less to do."

when a house dies
one likes to imagine
it dies completely
after fifty odd
years of milky tea
and machine-lace
curtains hiding the old bed-
spread, the old toys the grand-
children played with on
their occasional pilgrimages
home . . . jars of vegetables
brought up out of the basement or
in from the garage, where the screen
door swings shut

one likes to imagine that it is gone
demolished
disappeared from this soil
that even the tulip bulbs have been
uprooted and that the neighborhood
has vanished into fog leaving only mumbled
words—the song about a horse
named Napoleon perhaps a photograph
of the tree out back, a lamp
that doesn't match any of the furniture
a sneeze at the dust coating
a piece of trash—a book too moldy
to save

we will never go back to that town
the house was a pile of upturned bricks
. . . years ago—we didn't look

let it never rise again
differently

20 November 2008

a forgotten holiday approaches

St Catherine's Day (25 November).

—Vermeer, The Lacemaker

This (probably fictional) martyr, very popular in the Middle Ages, was said to have been broken on a wheel—hence the ‘Catherine wheel’ firework. She was patron saint of lace-makers, spinners, rope-makers, wheelwrights, carpenters, young women, and female students, and some of these had customs particular to her day, although some of them seem to have confused the Saint with Queen Catherine of Aragon. In Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, lace-makers and children attending lace-making school, took Catterns Day as a holiday. They called at neighbours' houses requesting refreshment, and some of them dressed up as men to do so. Cakes called wiggs (oblong-shaped and flavoured with caraway seeds) and ‘hot pot’ (warm beer containing beaten eggs and rum) were traditional fare on the day. In the evening, catherine wheels were ignited and a game of jumping the candlestick was played—if the candle went out as a woman jumped over it she would have bad luck for the coming year.
